Welcome to eXoWin9x Vol. 1: 1994-1996!This pack includes 662 Windows 9x games. Windows 9x is a term being used to refer to both Windows 95 and Windows 98. Windows 95 was the first widely adopted version of Windows. It was the first native 32-bit version, with its predecessor, Windows 3.x, having very limited 32-bit capability. Windows 95 was also the first Windows OS to directly interface with the computer hardware, rather than relying on MS-DOS to do this. DirectX was released during the Windows 95 lifespan as well, to further enhance Windows gaming capabilities. The focus of the main project is on games that were either released in English or are fairly easy to play without knowledge of their native language. While the focus is on English games, we have included other language releases as well as we have found them. Currently the focus is on games; however, entertainment applications and certain productivity apps will be considered for future releases as an add-on pack. The software included in eXoWin9x is already set up using DOSBox X, with a handful of games relying on 86Box. Virtual Hard Drives (VHDs) are used along with parent images of the Win9X OS. This allows the pack to run games in Windows without each game needing its own copy. Future years are coming soon, starting with 1997 and continuing into the 2000's. A massive thanks for this pack goes to TaraLonger. He took the limitations I had laid out in emulating a 9x pack and found ways to work around these issues. He developed some incredibly clever scripts that allowed us to release this pack without packing in 100s of gigabytes of duplicate 9x data. Then, once the methodology was proven, he spent months getting the games in this pack running. Dutchmagic was also a massive help, as he tested and worked on metadata for hundreds of these games. We owe TaraLonger and Dutchmagic gratitude for their work in using this framework to help preserve such an iconic part of our history.Features Include: • One Click Launching - Games are preconfigured and setup in stand alone emulators. No prior knowledge or experience needed.• Completely Portable - All games are run inside of virtual machines, with no changes made to your host system. • Multiplayer Gaming - IPX hosting is automated, allowing you to play multiplayer games online against anyone else who has the project installed. • Consistent Metadata - Each games front end entry is normalized to the same genres, series, and other fields with the rest of the eXo projects. • Tons of Extras - Games include manuals, soundtracks, strategy guides, universal hint system files, commercials, trailers, and just about any other documents or files of interest. • Foreign Titles - Several foreign titles are being included from the start.
